About... the Alexander Technique College
  Back

world map   The Alexander Technique College (ATC) is an international school with students coming to train from Norway, Denmark, Italy, Sweden, America, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, France and Holland.

Brighton and Hove is a lively, cosmopolitan city with much to interest an overseas student.
See Location for more details.

The ATC prepares people for the challenge of joining a growing profession that offers personal satisfaction, as well as a service to others. It is now well established throughout the world, with teachers working in many different environments.

Our aims are to:

  • To support an attitude of life-long learning and self-development in individuals.
  • To provide the highest standard of training, education and services to all individuals and organisations with whom The Alexander Technique College interacts.
  • To create a training environment that is both stimulating and challenging; supporting the personal and professional development of each individual in an appropriate way.
  • To identify and respect to the best of our ability, the psychophysical conditions of individual clients, trainees, teachers, postgraduate students and those engaging in training or learning in any capacity within the organization.
  • To work in harmony with the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT) and to abide by the code of conduct.
  • To promote awareness and understanding of the Alexander Technique to the general public.

The core curriculum is informed by the Head of Training, Carolyn Nicholls', Masters research study in “Analysis of the Specialised Use of the Hands in Alexander Technique”.

In addition, teaching is based on the emerging “Competencies” document for teachers; a long term project undertaken by the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT). Students are expected to work on themselves, both during course hours and out- side of college. There is also access to a substantial resource library for students.

Our sustainability policy:

Everyone wants to do what they can to reduce their impact on the environment. As a business concerned with practical aspects of positive living and good use of the body and mind, we take practical, simple steps to do our bit. Our thinking is this:

Good for us, good for the planet, good for you.

Some of the things we do with:

PAPER & INK

  • Buy recycled printer paper
  • Refill our ink cartridges
  • Print out only essential documents-on both sides

    of the paper.

  • Recycle our paper. We shred confidential

documents and compost them. Yes the worms
    read our old bank statements.

HEAT & LIGHT

  • Keep our heating to the recommended 19-200 C. We’ll add an extra layer rather than turn the
        heating up.
  • All our light bulbs are energy saving and we turn off lights wherever we can.
  • We turn off our computers at night-we don’t leave them on standby

OTHER STUFF

  • We never buy bottled water. We use coated aluminium water bottles with funky designs from the V&A
  • All our cleaning products are environmentally friendly.
  • We drink fair-trade herbal teas.
  • We use cloth shopping bags
  • We shop local
  • We walk to work or take the bus
  • We keep up to date by looking at our carbon footprint on the Carbon Trust website www.carbontrust.co.uk and following their advise.
